Understanding Selflessness, a Poem

Why is it so,
that to give with the purest intentions:
Time, Shelter, Sustenance, and Patience,
Hardly merits any praise or gratefulness
to the level that it is due.

No satisfaction to be enjoyed from equal reward;
the exchange of love and commitment
hopelessly skewed toward the benefit of the receiving party.
An obligatory card is presented, a sporadic hug on a generous day,
occasionally maybe even a thoughtful gesture.
The impassive act in accordance to that which they feel obligated,
a stark contrast to the loving care of their counterparts.

The wordless deeds of the dedicated simply become lost in the span of time,
floating in fond memories that the mind locks securely away.
To live is to partake in this ageless exchange,
the endless inequality overlooked
due to our fleeting roles in the scheme of existence.

Were it to be expanded, we may be witnesses
to the rebellion of these selfless forces
as practicality takes over.
However, because this has yet to materialize,
we on the fortunate side of the coin toss
can breathe a deep sigh of undeserving relief.
The ruse we were placed in is still yet to be discovered.
